2026 Luskin Summit: Researchers to reveal how Los Angeles residents view quality of life in annual survey

LOS ANGELES () — How are you feeling about living in Los Angeles County?

Researchers at UCLA are just a few weeks away from releasing their big annual survey, examining quality of life here from all angles.

The UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs‘ Quality of Life Index, also known as QLI, measures satisfaction across nine major categories, from cost of living to public safety.

The report’s findings will be revealed at the 2026 Luskin Summit, happening Wednesday, April 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The summit offers a data-driven conversation on California’s most pressing issues, and a brainstorm session on how to solve them.

Registration is now open for the event, which carries the theme of “Building Power Through Local Solutions” for 2026.

“It’s a very lively discussion,” former UC Regent Cecilia Estolano said. “It’s become kind of the place to be if you do public policy, or policy generally in Los Angeles.”

The QLI’s results can be surprising, like when Angelenos placed transportation as their least important factor for quality of life in 2015.

“I said, ‘Nobody’s going to believe this. I mean, everybody complains about traffic here,'” said Zev Yaroslavsky, director of the Los Angeles Initiative.

It wasn’t until Yaroslavsky started ranking the list for himself while sitting in traffic that the picture became clearer.

“I said, ‘Well, what would I say between transportation and healthcare?’ Well, of course, ‘healthcare.’ ‘Transportation or my neighborhood? Education? Cost of living?’ And it came down.”

With questions remaining the same year after year, Yaroslavsky said even small shifts in any category can point to a major mood swing.

“We get this composite of what’s important to you,” Yaroslavsky said. “When it does drop a point or goes up a point, it’s… it’s significant.”

Standalone questions for 2026 will also measure your feelings on affordability, immigration following the Los Angeles ICE raids, and this year’s mayoral election.

Former U.S. Senator Lafonza Butler will give the summit’s keynote address.

The address follows a morning of sessions focused on California’s housing strategy, environmental health and justice, transportation security, and socio-economic vulnerability and prosperity.

“The Luskin School in particular has been a leader in coming up with progressive solutions to some of the most intractable problems facing urban societies, and so we are a great place to host those discussions in a very frank and direct manner,” Estolono said.

The summit will be held at the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center. The center is at 425 Westwood Plaza, in Los Angeles.
