LOS ANGELES () — Recent Oscar nominee Rose Byrne is back at the box office this weekend in “Tow.” The film is based on a true story that takes moviegoers on an emotional ride.
Byrne helps tell the story of Amanda Ogle, a Seattle mom who fights her way out of “tow fee hell” to get her car, which is also her home, back.
“You think a person who is unhoused may look or act a typical way and that’s not the case at all. It’s a varied spectrum,” Byrne noted. “And people have such prejudices around you and how you got there and it really can just happen.”
As the film plays out, this mom gets some help from strangers turned friends.
“You know, this was years of their life, in reality, years and years of their life fighting this case and many ups and downs,” Byrne said.
“It was just so surreal for them. I mean, I kind of had, I mean, I was feeling it with them. I couldn’t imagine seeing someone dressed as me,” said co-star Dominic Sessa.
The main co-star of “Tow” isn’t Dominic Sessa, Demi Lovato or even Oscar winners Ariana Debose and Octavia Spencer, you might say it’s a 1991 Blue Toyota Camry.
“I actually went to Seattle and saw the original car. She still had it but it’s been infested with various problems and stuff. But she still had it. It’s everything, it’s the big character of the film,” Byrne said.
For director Stephanie Laing, that Camry is very familiar.
“It wasn’t my first car, but I actually did have a 1991 Camry that I used to drive across the country to start my career in Hollywood. I drove from Ohio to L.A. and it had missing hub caps and I was really afraid it wasn’t going to make it but it did,” Laing said.
“Tow” also stars Elsie Fisher and Simon Rex. It’s rated R and is new to theaters this weekend.
