Oscar nominee and veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer talks ‘F1,’ reflects on his love of providing joy to moviegoers

LOS ANGELES — Jerry Bruckheimer could be called a “super producer.” He’s been producing for more than 50 years now, with a resume of blockbusters: “Top Gun,” “Flashdance,” “Con Air,” “Remember The Titans,” as well as franchises including “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Beverly Hills Cop.”

Bruckheimer heads to the Oscars on Sunday as a nominee for Best Picture hopeful with “F1,” as well as four other nominations.

He remembers the day when this particular race had half the number of nominees.

“I think it’s always been hard. The five (films) that were nominated before were all shoe-ins to get the award, you would think,” said Bruckheimer. “Now we have 10, so you really don’t know where it’s going. Two movies could cancel each other out. You just don’t know.”

“F1” is also nominated for visual effects, film editing and original score. The high-speed racing movie has plenty of dangerous moments, as do other Bruckheimer movies. When it comes to that make-believe movie danger, he’s all in.

“It’s the kid in me,” said Bruckheimer. “It’s the movies that I loved when I grew up and want to give that same experience to audiences today that I got when I was a kid.”

Bruckheimer continued: “What I do is I create things or help create things with the team that entertain audiences everywhere. And that’s what ‘F1’ did. And that’s what ‘Pirates’ did. That’s what’Top Gun’ did. So the fact that we gave joy for a couple hours to people everywhere is the thrill for me.”

There are more thrills ahead for Bruckheimer as well. Among the many projects he’s working on: another “Top Gun,” “Heat 2” and a UFO movie.
