Shirley Raines death: Memorial service held to honor Beauty 2 The Streetz founder for years of service supporting LA homeless

LOS ANGELES () — Friends and community members gathered Saturday to honor Shirley Raines, the beloved nonprofit founder and CEO who helped care for the homeless on L.A.’s Skid Row.

The event was held at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, where attendees reflected on Raines’ efforts. Raines died in January at the age of 58.

Shirley Raines, the beloved nonprofit founder and CEO who helped care for the homeless on L.A.’s Skid Row, has died, her organization said.

Since 2017, the Long Beach resident offered beauty services, food, showers and more to the homeless people of Skid Row through her Beauty 2 The Streetz nonprofit.

Loved ones described her work as a lifeline for many who often felt unseen.

“Miss Shirley was a dear friend, an amazing person, and incredible giver, and she’s someone who really left a mark on the world,” said sports commentator, TV host and Beauty 2 The Streetz board member Joy Taylor. “She was an incredible, vibrant, energetic, loving person that really poured herself into the community here in Los Angeles, and it’s a really tragic loss.”

Raines earned a national NAACP Image Award for the impact of her outreach. Those who attended the tribute said her dedication continues to inspire the city to view homelessness through a more humane lens.

Her legacy, speakers said, serves as an enduring reminder that homelessness does not diminish a person’s humanity.
