FAIRFAX DISTRICT, LOS ANGELES () — As outrage mounts over the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by federal agents, Southern Californian lawmakers Wednesday intensified their calls for sweeping changes within the Department of Homeland Security.
At Pan Pacific Park in the Fairfax District, local members of Congress denounced the fatal shootings of Good and Pretti. Their deaths have fueled protests nationwide against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and led to multiple demonstrations across Los Angeles in recent days.
“We cannot let DHS operate like a secret police force, unchecked and unaccountable. This is about standing up for our Constitution and basic civil rights,” said Rep. Laura Friedman, who represents Burbank, Glendale, Hollywood and other parts of L.A. “We will not stop until there is accountability and real reform.”
Just before lawmakers addressed the crowd, news broke that the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Pretti had been placed on leave.
“That removal of those officers shows that pressure is paying off,” Friedman told attendees.
But members of Congress argued that the move was only a first step.
Rep. Judy Chu, whose district includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley, called for the removal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Friedman accused Noem of lying to the public.
“She has lost the public’s trust because instead of being focused on leading a law enforcement agency, she’s been leading a cover-up,” Friedman said.
Rep. Brad Sherman said accountability must extend beyond the shootings.
Lawmakers also demanded consequences for Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino.
“He needs to face accountability,” Friedman said.
