HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES () — An apparent publicity move by Sydney Sweeney could bring legal trouble for the actress.
The 28-year-old pulled a promotional stunt at the Hollywood Sign for what’s believed to be her new lingerie brand.
Sweeney could be looking at possible trespassing and vandalism charges after draping the Hollywood Sign with dozens of bras.
The actress had a crew filming the whole thing, and the video was first obtained by TMZ.
In the cover of darkness, the video shows Sweeney tossing several clotheslines of bras over the big letters of the sign.
It was apparently a stunt to support her new lingerie line, though the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce says the production involving Sweeney was not authorized.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce owns the intellectual property rights to the image of the Hollywood Sign, and they say a “license or permission” would be needed from them to access the sign.
They say that step never happened.
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Steve Nissen issued the following statement:
“The production involving Sydney Sweeney and the Hollywood Sign, as reported by TMZ, was not authorized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce nor did we have prior knowledge of it. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce owns the intellectual property rights to the image of the Hollywood Sign, so that anyone intending to use and/or access the Hollywood Sign for commercial purposes must obtain a license or permission from the Hollywood Chamber to do so. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce did not grant a license or permission of any kind to the production involving Sydney Sweeney as reported by TMZ, nor did anyone seek a license or permission from the Chamber for that production.”
Eyewitness News checked with Los Angeles police to see if there are any legal issues with what occurred, but as of Monday afternoon, LAPD said no police report had been filed.
Sweeney later posted her own video of the stunt on Instagram on Monday, linking to her new brand SYRN by Sydney Sweeney.
Eyewitness News asked the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce what steps they may take next to resolve the dispute and whether they plan to seek charges. The chamber sent the following reply:
“We are still investigating how and under what authority (if any) the production accessed the site.”
The bras were reportedly taken down after the shoot with Sweeney and her team.
