Reports of assault on police officer at site of MLK parade prompts large crowd, police presence in Leimert Park

LEIMERT PARK, LOS ANGELES () — Reports of an assault on a police officer near the MLK Jr. Day Parade route in Leimert Park prompted a large police presence Monday afternoon.

Dozens of LAPD vehicles lined up near Vernon Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard after they were called to help with an unruly crowd.

Officers created a scrimmage line in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

Video from AIR7 showed officers moving in on a large crowd at an El Pollo Loco where Eyewitness News learned there was some sort of disturbance.

Further details about the assault on the officer were not immediately available.

Just before 2 p.m., officers responded to a stabbing call at Martin Luther King Jr. and Crenshaw boulevards.

As officers attempted to investigate the stabbing, they reported that the crowd got unruly and called for back up.

Information of the stabbing victim or a possible suspect were not immediately available.

It is unclear if both incidents are connected.

Mayor Karen Bass released a statement about the stabbing incident that read in part:

“Unfortunately after the MLK Jr. Day Parade, LAPD responded to a group of young people creating a disturbance and there are reports of a stabbing towards the end of the parade route that remains under investigation.

“My Office of Community Safety is coordinating closely with LAPD and community violence interventionists in the area to de-escalate tensions and disperse the crowd to ensure everyone makes it home safely. Los Angeles has zero tolerance for this type of violence.”

This is a developing news story. More details will be added as more information becomes available.
