Chelsea Handler is not a fan of how Timothée Chalamet handled his Marty Supreme press tour.
“He seemed pretty serious about winning and getting acknowledged for his great acting,” the comedian, 50, said of Chalamet, 30, during an appearance on the Tuesday, January 14, episode of the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast.
Ahead of the premiere of Marty Supreme, Chalamet made headlines for his controversial interviews talking about how his performance in the sports dramedy was his best in years.
“This is probably my best performance and it’s been like seven, eight years that I feel like I have been handing in really, really committed top of the line performances. And it’s important to say it outloud,” he told a reporter in November 2025. “The discipline and the work ethic I’m bringing to these things. I don’t want people to take it for granted. I don’t want to take it for granted. This is really some top-level s***.”
Handler added that while she thinks Chalamet is a “a great actor,” his seemingly cocky attitude skewed his message.
“It’s hard to hear someone talk about how great they are at acting,” she said.
Handler explained that she is ultimately rooting for Leonardo DiCaprio to win for his performance in the film One Battle After Another, adding that she has his vote because of his talent and humble nature.
“Leo wouldn’t do that. Leo is a movie star. He wouldn’t talk like that,” she said. “That’s new. I haven’t heard any actor kind of talk like that.”
Handler wasn’t the only one put off by Chalamet’s remarks. The actor received backlash online for patting himself on the back before awards season even kicked off.
“He’s doing a bit much… wait for the people to see it and give you acclaim before you tell them that they should be giving you acclaim 😭😭😭,” one fan wrote via X.
Following the backlash, Chalamet later addressed his previous remarks.
“This is in the spirit of Marty, and I feel like this is ultimately an original film at a time when original movies aren’t really put out,” he said of the press tour in a December 2025 interview with Indie Wire. “It’s a movie about the pursuit of a dream. I’m leaving it on the field. Whether it’s the merch or the Zoom or the media appearances, I’m trying to get this out in the biggest way possible. In the spirit of Marty Mauser.”
Despite rubbing some people the wrong way, Chalamet did take home Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards for his performance in Marty Supreme. During his acceptance speech at the Critics Choice awards — which Handler hosted earlier this month — Chalamet thanked girlfriend Kylie Jenner for her support over the past three years.
“Thank you to my partner of three years. Thank you for our foundation. I love you,” he gushed. “I couldn’t do this without you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
While the 2026 Oscars nominations have yet to be announced, Chalamet is a frontrunner to secure a Best Actor nod following his recent wins.
