Long before Clareesa Shields and Laila Ali, there was Christy Salters (Sydney Sweeney), who began her boxing career in the late ‘80s before dominating for the next decade and a half. But Christy’s successes in the ring didn’t translate to her personal life, marked by an abusive relationship with her trainer and husband, James (Ben Foster). Christy is a fighter, though, and she’s determined to find the happiness she deserves, even if she has to battle her way to happiness.
Christy is a standard underdog sports movie that highlights a sports figure who is anything but conventional. Female boxers were rare in the ‘90s, but Salters established that there was an audience for the sport she was so good at. Sweeney is best known for her sexpot role in Euphoria, but she proves here that she has what it takes to disappear almost completely into a role that’s not defined by how good she looks in a pair of jeans. If you can stomach the unfortunate ‘90s fashion, Christy is a rousing sports movie that will inspire you to pick up a pair of gloves and jump into the ring yourself. (Author’s note: Please don’t do that.)
