LOS ANGELES () — Shirley Raines leaves behind a presence that will forever be unmatched.
Ms. Shirley, as she was known, dedicated herself to helping the less fortunate after her son tragically passed away.
Ms. Shirley founded Beauty 2 The Streetz.
The nonprofit brings grooming and personal care to folks who don’t have access to it.
The goal is to revitalize the way people feel about themselves when they look in the mirror.
Marcos Perez-Ogilvie, a board member of Beauty 2 The Streetz said, “Ms. Shirley was one of one and there’s no replacing the work that she did. So much of the work she did was through her own personal blood, sweat and tears.”
“She kind of put that grief into the organization and really devoted herself to the community out in Skid Row and Las Vegas,” Perez-Ogilvie said.
Her work even getting national recognition.
In 2021, Anderson Cooper and Kelly Ripa announced Ms. Shirely as CNN’s Hero of the Year.
She was honored for her dedication to helping LA’s struggling homeless population.
During the ceremony Ms. Shirley said, “I am a mother without a son and there are a lot of people on the streets without a mother, and I feel like it’s a fair exchange.”
Perez-Ogilvie said, “She called everybody ‘Kings’ and ‘Queens’ so I think that empowerment of making people feel like they have just as much dignity and value as everyone else I think was one of the main drivers for that.”
After her sudden passing earlier this year Ms. Shirley’s mission of service hasn’t stopped.
Beauty 2 The Streetz continues providing resources to people who need it.
This year, because of Ms. Shirley’s commitment to ensuring overlooked members of the LGBTQIA+, homeless, and black and brown communities are seen, she is being honored as LA Pride’s Legacy Grand Marshal.
“Ms. Shirley always said that she didn’t do any of this for the awards and she didn’t necessarily; we used to squabble with her because anytime she got honored for something she’d be like, ‘I don’t have time for that. I have to be doing the work and the mission,'” Perez-Ogilvie said.
The theme of LA PRIDE is ‘Rise with Pride’.
That’s exactly how Ms. Shirley made those around her feel: get up and be proud of who you are.
