“King of the Hill” is back with its signature humor, a whole lot of heart and plenty of new experiences for Hank, Peggy and Bobby Hill in season 15.
“The new experiences will be new experiences based on where they are in life. Peggy dealing with menopause, Hank dealing with ‘can i not work,’ Bobby and Connie dealing with the growing pains of an adult relationship,” explained executive producer and showrunner Saladin Patterson.
The Hills get by with a little help from their friends, including Bill Dauterive, voiced by Stephen Root.
“He’s a sweet guy, always has been, always will be. But I think in the first iteration he was a simpler human being,” Root said. “It’s a new world. He’s in a different social situation and he has more emotional impact than he ever had. So I think this whole show and every character on it is going through a radical change, which is amazing in animation.”
“Watching these folks with a lot of foibles work their way through the challenges that we all face, it’s kind of inspiring,” said Lauren Tom, who voices several characters including Minh and Connie.
“I think that friendship wise it’s a testament to how lovely the Hills are that they kinda put up with the craziness,” added Ashley Gardner, who voices Nancy Gribble.
The cast, who are friends in real life, don’t get to see much of each other. That’s why they make the table reads really stand out.
“We’ll have all the writers there, some producers and tech people,” said Root. “We have probably about a 30-40 person audience for the table read. And that’s so delightfully helpful in terms of making the humor come through because we can actually hear the reaction to the humor.”
The show is pulling out all the stops – and the lawnmowers – to promote the new season. The show has a billboard on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles depicting Hank Hill about to mow what looks to be fresh lawn!
“I want to meet the person who came up with that idea because it is genius! Seeing Hank Hill driving around on his lawnmower on a billboard,” said Gardner, as Tom added. “It’s so exciting that Hulu and Disney believe in our show so much. Ashley and I want to drive over there just to see the billboard!”
From the streets of Los Angeles to the streets of Arlen, Texas, the fictional city where the show takes place, “King of the Hill” is certainly making its mark.
All 10 episodes of season 15 are streaming now on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
