Prime Video has such a diverse selection of films that it’s not hard to find Oscar-winning movies among them. The difficult part is narrowing the list down.
For this month, the streamer has added a trio of films from the ’90s that earned several Academy Awards between them.
Watch With Us has chosen those films to be the three Oscar-winning movie masterpieces to watch on Prime Video in April.
The selections include a Western starring a Yellowstone actor, a love story and a girl’s road trip flick.
‘Dances with Wolves’ (1990)
Kevin Costner was nominated for Best Actor for Dances With Wolves, but he and his costars were snubbed in the acting categories. So Costner just had to be satisfied with winning Best Director and Best Picture, as well as the other five Oscars that the film picked up. This remains the magnum opus of Costner’s career over three decades later.
Costner plays a Union soldier, John J. Dunbar, who is the sole occupant of a distant army outpost. While living in the wild, Dunbar befriends a Sioux tribe, including a medicine man, Kicking Bird (Ziŋtká Nagwáka). But it’s Kicking Bird’s adoptive daughter, Stands With A Fist (Mary McDonnell), who wins Dunbar’s heart. Unfortunately for the duo, Dunbar’s Union compatriots won’t look kindly on that pairing once they discover his relationship with the tribe.
Dances with Wolves is streaming on Prime Video.
‘Titanic’ (1997)
Of the 14 Oscar nominations received by Titanic, it won 11, including Best Picture and Best Director for James Cameron. This was unarguably the most successful movie of the ’90s, and it was even the highest-grossing movie of all time until Cameron’s Avatar was released in 2009. Even more impressive is that Titanic still has a devoted following nearly 30 years after its release.
Most of the movie is set during 1912 as the maiden voyage of the Titanic brings Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) into an unexpected whirlwind romance at sea. Understandably, Rose’s fiancé, Cal Hockley (Billy Zane), is furious about that, even though Rose clearly never loved him. Cal’s attempt to destroy their relationship is overshadowed by the inevitable iceberg that will sink the Titanic. And if Rose and Jack aren’t careful, they’ll go down with the ship.
Titanic can be rented or purchased on Prime Video.
‘Thelma & Louise’ (1991)
It’s fair to say that Genna Davis and Susan Sarandon both deserved their Best Actress nominations for Thelma & Louise, but it’s also likely that going up against each other canceled out their respective votes. That said, it probably would have been hard for either of them to have beaten the eventual winner, Jodie Foster, for The Silence of the Lambs. However, Thelma & Louise did take home the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Callie Khouri, so it wasn’t a total loss.
Davis and Sarandon play the title characters, Thelma Dickinson and Louise Sawyer, a pair of friends whose weekend vacation goes horribly wrong. Louise murders a man who tried to sexually assault Thelma, and she correctly predicts that few would believe her story. The only chance these women have to remain free is to outrun the law on their way to Mexico. Brad Pitt also has a brief role as J.D., a bad boy who catches Thelma’s eye.
Thelma & Louise is streaming on Prime Video.
