SOUTH LOS ANGELES () — One person was pronounced dead Saturday morning after a fire in a detached garage triggered a series of fireworks explosions in a residential area of South Los Angeles, officials said.
Firefighters responded at 5:32 a.m. to the 2400 block of South Ninth Avenue and extinguished the fire within 20 minutes, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
Video footage recorded by a passing driver showed fireworks exploding over the garage and nearby homes as tall flames and a column of black smoke rose into the sky.
“One 30-year-old female with an unknown injury reported and being evaluated by LAFD personnel,” the agency said in an initial statement.
Just after 7 a.m., the Fire Department said the incident commander at the scene requested an arson unit and cadaver dogs for a possible missing person.
The fatality was confirmed hours later by a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department, whose detectives also responded the the location. The identity of the deceased person was not immediately released.
Officers also removed a large quantity of fireworks from the home, an LAPD spokesperson said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
