Thousands will lace up their shoes Sunday at UCLA Wilson Plaza in a bid to make pancreatic cancer history.
Since 1998, the LA Cancer Challenge has raised more than $12.1 million to advance research and provide support for those facing pancreatic cancer.
A sea of purple will be seen across Westwood Sunday, as survivors and their families step off at 9 a.m. for the 5K walk/run.
The Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer produces the annual event.
“While the disease is very devastating, the event itself is uplifting, hopeful,” CEO and executive director Lisa Manheim said. “It’s about coming together and making a difference.”
While pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose early, Manheim said major developments with drugs and vaccines, especially in the last year, are providing hope.
“The research is making a difference,” she said.
“Whether you’ve had a connection to pancreatic cancer, or any cancer, it’s really important that people come out, join the community, and do what it takes to keep this research going.”
Eyewitness News reporter Denise Dador will emcee the walk, getting things kicked off.
The LA Cancer Challenge is about 85% of its fundraising goal of $750,000.
If you’d like to donate or get involved Sunday, visit the LA Cancer Challenge website.
“I think the day is healing for many,” Manheim said.
“To be surrounded by people going through what you’re going through, and to see those survivors out there, walking alongside you, showing you that you are not a statistic, that, don’t look at those statistics. Have hope, and we really push that at the LA Cancer Challenge.”
