There’s a new mural going up in the city of Santa Ana, meant to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Orange County School of the Arts.

“What side of the brush do I use?” 7’s Tony Cabrera asked, as he helped muralist Eric Michael with some finishing touches.

The huge, new mural can be seen on 4th Street, in the heart of Downtown Santa Ana.

“Due to the Mexican influence of the mural itself, I opted to go with the papel picado design, which one of my students helped me do,” Michael said.

The muralist worked with students from Orange County School of the Arts to get it done, just as the school celebrates a big milestone.

“This is a dedication to the city of Santa Ana for all that they’ve done to embrace the school over the years,” president and CEO Teren Shaffer said.

“(The mural is) in partnership also with Relampago del Cielo, which is a professional ballet folklorico company based in Orange County, to celebrate their 50th anniversary and our 40th anniversary.”

Shaffer is proud of the project, and how it reflects the city’s vibrant arts community.

“I’ve seen it come to life over the last few months, but the level of color and imagination and the beauty of ballet folklorico to me is stunning,” Shaffer said.

Michael said the mural captured depictions of actual Relampago del Cielo dancers.

Now that it’s nearly complete, he said he’s full of pride.

“Realizing the magnitude of it and just looking back at the times that I just wished I could put something on the wall and now to do it to this scale is just a dream come true,” Michael said.
