LOS ANGELES () — A newly obtained video appears to show an electrical explosion during testing of the Los Angeles International Airport People Mover.

The video was provided to 7 On Your Side Investigates by sources. In the footage, a train is seen moving before a large explosion occurs.

Documents previously obtained by 7 that was provided to lenders on the People Mover project state that three “arc blast incidents” occurred on Sept. 23 and a fourth occurred on Sept. 25. An arc blast incident is the technical term for a type of electrical explosion.

In a statement, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) said, “We cannot confirm the source of this video although we have detected altered content circulating online. We can confirm an arc flash occurred late last month.”

7 On Your Side followed up with LAWA to ask whether officials believe the video had been altered but did not receive a clear answer. A source who provided the video told 7 the footage had not been altered.

LINXS, the project’s contractor, said in a statement that “there is no defect in the installed electrical system. There was also no damage to the passenger vehicles, the system responded as designed.”

Repairs related to the blast incidents have been completed and testing of the People Mover project has resumed, according to LAWA.

LINXS also said it remains committed to completing the project.

The earliest the People Mover could open to the public is early next year.

The project originally broke ground in 2019 with a targeted opening date of 2023.
