HYDE PARK, LOS ANGELES () — A search is underway for a hit-and-run driver and her passenger after two teenage siblings were hit while crossing the street with their mother in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, killing a 16-year-old boy.
The deadly incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday near West 60th Street and South 10th Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The driver of a blue sedan hit the brother and sister before crashing into a parked car, according to police. The driver and a passenger then took off on foot.
A 16-year-old boy died at the scene, and a 14-year-old girl was taken to the hospital, police said.
Video from the scene shows the suspect vehicle speeding down the street and appearing to run a stop sign before the collision. Screams could be heard on the video just after the impact.
Eliseo Martinez Hernandez, the older brother of the victims, told Eyewitness News that his mom was able to pull his sister out of the way.
“They were crossing the street, just at the stop sign, and I guess the car just blew the stop sign. They were coming at least 40 [mph] the firefighter said. And yeah, my mom was able to pull my sister out of the way in time, but my brother wasn’t so fortunate,” Eliseo Martinez Hernandez said. “My sister is, thankfully, in stable condition. She is going to get surgery for her pelvis. She has a fractured pelvis.”
Those who live near the scene say speeding is not uncommon in the area.
“They’ll run straight through the stop sign like it’s a green light,” said Frexinet Davis. “They won’t even slow down. They won’t even do the ‘California roll’ where you slow down and move gingerly through the intersection. I’ve seen people literally race to get to Crenshaw.”
The Martinez Hernandez family has set up a GoFundMe to help with medical and funeral expenses.
Eliseo says his younger brother loved to do one thing — bake.
“My brother is a smart kid,” Eliseo Martinez Hernandez said of his younger brother, Hernan. “He had a lot of talent. He was really picky, but he had a lot of talent. I’m not sure where he was going to go; I just know he was going to go far in life.”
Meanwhile, a search is underway for the female driver and male passenger who got out of the car and took off running, police said. No arrests have been made.
