MAR VISTA, LOS ANGELES () — A suspect was taken into custody in connection with the deadly shooting of a Culver City bus driver, Los Angeles police announced Friday.

The shooting occurred around 5:15 p.m. Thursday near Centinela and Mitchell avenues in Mar Vista.

“The LAPD has taken a suspect into custody believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of a bus driver,” police said in a statement Friday. “Robbery Homicide Division detectives are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

Police continued their search Friday for the passenger accused of shooting and killing a Culver City bus driver following a dispute in Mar Vista.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Culver CityBus service has been suspended through the weekend.

Police have not released further information about the investigation.

Two witnesses on the bus told police they suspected the male passenger was intoxicated when he began arguing with the driver over a missed stop.

LAPD Capt. Eric Eppolito said the suspect then pulled out a gun and shot the bus driver.

The driver was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators said the victim was a man in his 40s, but his identity has not been released.

The suspect fled on a bicycle after the shooting, police said.

Video from the scene showed at least one apparent bullet hole through a bus window.

Culver City released a statement that says, in part: “Our hearts are shattered. Their loss will be felt across our City team… This loss is deeply personal for our Culver CityBus team and will be felt across our entire City organization.”

“Culver CityBus service will be suspended throughout the weekend as we honor this loss and give our team time to grieve. Our hearts are with the family, loved ones and colleagues during this devastating time,” the statement added. “When services do resume, please be kind to our operators and transit team as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.”
