SANTA MONICA, Calif. () — Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metro bus near the Santa Monica Pier Friday.

The person was struck at about 2 p.m. near Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

Police said a pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metro bus. Video from the scene showed both a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus and a Metro bus stopped at the intersection, with police gathered primarily around the Santa Monica bus. A police command post was established at the location.

L.A. Metro released the following statement Friday afternoon:

“A westbound Metro 33 Line Bus, pulling away from the bus stop at Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica, made contact with a pedestrian, resulting in a fatality. Preliminary reports indicate the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and positioned themself under the bus as it pulled away. Metro extends its deepest sympathies to the person’s family and friends and thanks the Santa Monica Police and Fire Departments for their prompt response. The Santa Monica Police Department is leading the investigation.”

Santa Monica police said they are investigating this incident as a death and described the pedestrian as a 39-year-old woman.

Main Street was closed between Ocean Park Boulevard and Hollister Avenue, according to police. Traffic was also impacted on westbound Ocean Park Boulevard approaching Main Street. Area streets have since reopened.

No further details were immediately available but police said they are reviewing possible video evidence.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
