FULLERTON, Calif. () — New details emerge about the 18-year-old Cal State Fullerton student who died after a fraternity party.
The family of Anthony Blas launched a GoFundMe page saying Anthony loved playing football along with his twin brother and they say he was looking forward to his future.
“Anthony was such a fun, loving, and unforgettable person. He brought laughter and happiness wherever he went, and he was deeply loved by his family, friends, and everyone who knew him,” the statement posted to GoFundMe says.
“Anthony had so much life ahead of him, and he just recently turned 18 years old. He loved playing football along with his twin brother. He was excited about his future and the dreams he was just beginning to build for himself. Anthony was a freshman student who had only been at Cal State University Fullerton for a few short weeks, and he was excited and looking forward to his future.”
The freshman was pledging to a fraternity the university hasn’t officially acknowledged for years. The family and students interviewed identified the fraternity as Delta Chi.
According to the university’s website, Delta Chi’s recognition was revoked effective April 2021 through at least January 2029. The university cites numerous violations, including alcohol and illegal drug violations and hazing.
Fullerton police said officers were called to St. Jude Medical Center shortly after midnight on Sept. 13 after an unresponsive 18-year-old was dropped off at the hospital’s emergency department.
“Despite life-saving measures, the male was pronounced deceased by medical staff. Fullerton police detectives responded to the location and began their death investigation,” Fullerton police Sgt. Ryan O’Neil said at the time.
The investigation led detectives to the 2100 block of Teri Place, an area near the Cal State Fullerton campus that neighbors described as “frat row.” The fraternities in the area are unaffiliated with the university and located off campus.
Blas’ father told Eyewitness News that his son had been pledging an off-campus fraternity and learned Saturday morning that he had been accepted. He said Blas was invited to the fraternity house that night to celebrate, and questioned why no one called 911.
Fullerton police say alcohol consumption appears to be a factor in his death.
