At one point during the Barbie press tour, it felt as though Margot Robbie might never return to her beachy style again. From her every-shade-of-pink wardrobe to her artfully curled peroxide blonde hair, dressing up as the famous doll made for a convincing PR stunt at each premiere and event. The world duly lapped it up.

With that chapter now firmly behind her, Robbie has taken the opportunity to experiment with something different. Unveiling a new midi-bob at the Breakthrough Awards on Sunday, Robbie looked luminous, showing off sandy-blonde and sun-kissed color and a cut that grazed her collarbones. With a sleek, frizz-free finish and slight under-curl at the ends, the new style felt minimal, fresh, and grown-up–especially when paired with a strapless Rick Owens gown.

The midi-bob is certainly having a moment. From the red carpet–on the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Penélope Cruz, and Selena Gomez–to closer to home in salons nationwide, the cut has never been more popular. It’s no wonder: it might be an in-between cut, but it’s flattering on all face shapes and offers a low-maintenance alternative to shorter bobs. Leaving you with more hair to play with than a “little” bob, for example, this is perhaps the most versatile way into the endlessly popular bob trend.

Robbie was recently spotted on set for her new film A Big, Bold Beautiful Journey in Los Angeles, where she showed off yet another new hair look: copper-toned lengths and wispy bangs. That look came courtesy of a wig, but the star pulled it off with aplomb. She clearly has range in the hairstyle department.
