Lamar Odom is reflecting on the idea that he was married to Khloé Kardashian for “clout.”
“I gotta ask you — because my wife loves the Kardashians, my wife loves you — and she was saying that they were dragging you because [someone] in the Netflix documentary said you were with her for the clout. I was like, ‘I don’t believe that,’” host Louis Ruggiero said on a June episode of the “Nothing’s Off The Table With Louis Ruggiero” podcast.
Odom, 46, replied, “But that never came out of my mouth. I think that was my kids or my children or whoever they were interviewing at the time. Because, as I look into the camera, I didn’t really need more clout.”
The athlete pointed to his basketball career, explaining that he was “playing with the best player of my generation.”
“It just fit, you know what I mean. Sometimes when some things fit too well, the average person can’t understand or can’t even grasp it,” he said. “I didn’t really need anybody at that time. Right before I was getting married, I was in a relationship with an A+ actress, you know what I mean? And I had a beautiful Armenian speaking girlfriend at that time, you know what I mean? When I met Khloé so many things just fit naturally.”
Kardashian, 42, and Odom tied the knot in 2009 before splitting four years later. In 2015, Kardashian put their divorce on hold to care for Odom after his overdose at a brothel. She filed for divorce for the second time the next year.
Odom reflected on their relationship — and his overdose — in his Netflix documentary, Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom, which was released earlier this year. While promoting the series in April, Odom made headlines when he appeared on an episode of the Today show and appeared to downplay Kardashian saving his life.
When Jenna Bush Hager noted that Kardashian “stood by” his side and “saved” his life, he replied, “In some ways. God saved my life. My lord saved my life, honestly.”
“A lot of us were saying, ‘She rode hard for you,’” Sheinelle Jones told Odom, who admitted that Kardashian “took care” of him. He added, “But God took care of me the most. What I came back from is like a medical miracle.”
That same month, Odom seemingly revealed he has a new girlfriend while sharing a video of the pair at the Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena to support his former NBA team, the Los Angeles Lakers. Odom was seen walking down a hallway with his arm around the woman named Rachel Bradley and giving a peace sign for the camera.
