BELL COUNTY, Texas — Two people were killed when a military helicopter crashed in Central Texas on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office told News it received a 911 call about a helicopter crash after 1:30 p.m., and that it had sparked a grass fire that was “out of control” when deputies arrived on the scene.
Authorities said the fire is still burning, but there are no buildings or structures damaged.
A press release from the U.S. Army Fort Hood media center confirmed the helicopter that crashed was an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter based at Fort Hood.
“Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts,” Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, said. “Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information.”
It remains unclear where the helicopter was headed.
An investigation is ongoing into the crash.
