ENCINITAS, Calif. () — A driver was caught fast asleep behind the wheel while stopped in the middle of the 5 Freeway in Encinitas.
The incident happened back in December, but the California Highway Patrol just released the video as part of a statewide DUI maximum enforcement period over the weekend.
Dash and body camera video shows CHP officers coming across the vehicle stopped on the freeway. When they approached the truck, they found the driver slumped over in his seat. Officers had to move him out of his seat and drive his truck off the road.
The CHP said the man was arrested for driving under the influence.
DUI-related crashes in California resulted in an average of more than 800 deaths and nearly 20,000 injuries each year between 2023 and 2025, according to the CHP.
