On this week ten years ago, the UK took a decision that would change its course. After a campaign that was at times bitter and divisive, 52% of UK voters chose to leave the European Union.

The choice left Europe reeling, and determined not to set a precedent that would lead to other nations following the same path.

After years of painfully fraught negotiations between Brussels and London, an agreement was reached in late 2020 and refined three years later.

Today’s Special Report considers Brexit, 10 years on: what it has meant for both the United Kingdom and the European Union, how their relationship has evolved, and whether the UK could ever return to the bloc.

The programme features exclusive interviews with:

  • Michel Barnier, former EU chief Brexit negotiator
  • Leo Varadkar, former Irish Prime Minister
  • Nick Thomas-Symonds, UK Minister for EU Relations
  • Gina Miller, businesswoman and campaigner
  • Claire Fox, House of Lords peer

We also host two panel discussions with:

  • Martin Schirdewan, Member of the European Parliament (The Left)
  • Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, Member of the European Parliament (Renew Europe)

In addition, our correspondent Shona Murray joins us live from Dublin to examine Brexit’s political and economic impact on Ireland.
