BELLFLOWER, Calif. () — Two people are dead after an incident in Bellflower on Sunday. A man was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies as they responded to a home and found a woman dead.
According to the sheriff’s department, deputies responded to a call about a medical emergency at a home in the 9500 block of Maplewood Street shortly before 1 p.m.
A neighbor reportedly called 911 after they went to check on the home and spotted the woman lying in a pool of blood through the window.
“Someone from the neighborhood was checking on their neighbor and saw them unresponsive in the house, at which time they called 911,” a representative with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they also saw the unresponsive woman and went inside. As they performed a protective sweep to see if anyone else was in the home, deputies reportedly encountered the man with the gun.
“They looked inside that residence and noticed a female that appeared to be in medical distress in a large pool of blood. Those deputies immediately took action and forced entry into the house to render aid and do a protective sweep of the location to look for other victims,” a representative with the sheriff’s department said. “While inside the location, they encountered a male who was armed with a firearm, at which time, a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”
Two deputies fired shots at the man, killing him. The woman was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies clarified that they do not know if the man fired his gun at deputies, though his weapon appears to have been fired inside the home, according to the sheriff’s department. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
“There was like six, seven, at least, loud shots, just back-to-back. That was pretty much it. That was really the only noise I heard, aside from all the sirens of all the cops pulling up afterward,” said neighbor Taylor White. “But there was really nothing going on beforehand. Just all of a sudden, everybody was swarming the streets, and there was six loud shots, at least, back-to-back.”
Investigators believe the man and woman know each other. They said the woman appears to be in her 80s, while the man appears to be in his early 50s.
Deputies said they do not know who owns the home and could not confirm whether both the man and woman lived there, but they believe the woman’s death was not a random act of violence.
