It doesn’t seem easy to intimidate Arkansas men’s basketball coach John Calipari — the man many once considered to be the most powerful person in college basketball, pulling in top recruiting classes and regularly taking his teams to the Final Four.

Taylor Swift, however, was up for the job.

Calipari, 67, spoke to the “Eye on College Basketball” podcast at 2026 SEC media days where he told host Matt Norlander about running into the singer at Game 4 of the NBA Finals earlier this year.

“Taylor Swift is there and I was embarrassed to go up to her,” the Hall of Famer admitted.

Taylor Swift’s appearance at the 2026 NBA Finals sparked backlash from some basketball fans — but New York Knicks player Jose Alvarado is all about Swiftie mania. Alvarado, 28, exclusively told Us Weekly on Thursday, June 18, that it was “amazing” having Swift, 36, sitting courtside during Game 4 of the Knicks’ championship series on […]

Calipari said he was standing off to the side, watching Swift, 36, talking to Adam Sandler and his wife, Jackie, in the bowels of Madison Square Garden. He didn’t know it at the time, but Adam, 60, would officiate Swift’s wedding to Travis Kelce, which came a month later at the World’s Most Famous Arena.

“Adam Sandler, he is like a down-to-earth superstar, signing autographs, taking pictures, I was stunned,” Calipari recalled.

Now that Kelce, 37, has taken Swift to Cleveland! to show her the Heights, Calipari could have tried to bring her to Fayetteville and have her call the Hogs. The problem is that when given the chance for an introduction, Calipari pretended he was busy.

“I was intimated, and she came up and was bubbly,” he said, “I took my phone and I acted like I was on my phone. I wasn’t on my phone.”

Six-time Emmy winner Hank Azaria joined the chorus of critics who took issue with Taylor Swift sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden during Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals.  “I’ll tell you the one that bothered me was Taylor Swift. Come on,” Azaria, 62, said on the Thursday, June 11, broadcast of The Dan […]

He then showed Norlander how he pretended to swipe on his phone to look busy.

Needless to say, Calipari was not invited to the July 3 wedding ceremony.

“I was kind of disappointed, but things happen,” he joked.

Calipari shrinking from the spotlight seems outlandish to anyone familiar with him, and even former presidents might agree. He recalled how eager he was to meet President Barack Obama — presumably before the took his 2012 national champion Kentucky Wildcats to meet him at the White House.

As for Swift, she sat courtside for the Knicks’ classic 107-106 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, sporting a blue and orange “Stevie Knicks” shirt, designed by her friend Alana Haim, who sat next to her. (Alana’s shirt was a similar style and said “Knickleback,” and her sister, Este Haim, wore a “Knickole Kidman” shirt.)

The Knicks went on to win the series, 4-1, to capture their first NBA Championship since 1973.
