FULLERTON, Calif. () — An 18-year-old Cal State Fullerton freshman died after attending a party at an off-campus fraternity house over the weekend, according to police.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department identified the student as Anthony Joseph Blas from Whittier, who had just started college a few weeks ago.
Fullerton police said officers were called to St. Jude Medical Center shortly after midnight on Sunday after an unresponsive 18-year-old was dropped off at the hospital’s emergency department.
“Despite life-saving measures, the male was pronounced deceased by medical staff. Fullerton police detectives responded to the location and began their death investigation,” Fullerton police Sgt. Ryan O’Neil said. “Based on preliminary investigation, alcohol consumption is a contributing factor to the male’s death.”
The investigation led detectives to the 2100 block of Teri Place, an area near the Cal State Fullerton campus that neighbors described as “frat row.” The fraternities in the area are unaffiliated with the university and located off campus.
Neighbor Javier Colins said he saw several Fullerton police vehicles in the neighborhood.
“It’s terrible,” Colins said. “I watched through the cameras… a lot of cops over here.”
Blas’ father told Eyewitness News that his son had been pledging an off-campus fraternity and learned Saturday morning that he had been accepted. He said Blas was invited to the fraternity house that night to celebrate, and questioned why no one called 911.
Cal State Fullerton said it was aware of the student’s death and was offering support to members of the campus community.
“Cal State Fullerton is aware of the death of a student that occurred over the weekend at an off-campus residence. Our hearts are with the student’s family and the campus community during this incredibly difficult time. The university is providing support to students, including counseling through Counseling and Psychological Services, and is reaching out to those who may be affected,” a statement from the university read, in part.
Police said hazing is not considered a factor at this point, and there is no evidence suggesting foul play.
“It’s still an active and ongoing investigation. Our detectives are working every avenue and lead to determine the outcome of this investigation,” O’Neil said.
