ANAHEIM, Calif. () — A man was taken into custody after allegedly shooting a killing a woman inside a home in Anaheim, police said Wednesday.

The deadly gunfire unfolded in a neighborhood right next to the 91 Freeway, which was temporarily shut down in both directions at Brookhurst Street around 4 a.m. Initial reports indicated there was an active shooter, but the Anaheim Police Department later said that wasn’t the case.

Neighbors in the area said they heard a woman screaming before hearing dozens of gunshots go off.

Police said the shooting stemmed from some sort of domestic dispute. The suspect was described as a 38-year-old man who was dating the woman he allegedly killed.

There were five other adults inside of the home when it happened, police added. They apparently hid inside and called 911.

Police said it took about 45 minutes to get the suspect in custody and that there was a minor use of force.

Once officers got inside the home, they found a firearm in the front yard and the woman dead inside the garage. She has not been identified.

The neighbor next door told Eyewitness News he had just spoken with the woman around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, saying she appeared happy and introduced the suspect as her boyfriend.

Just a few hours later came the barrage of bullets. Several of them went through the neighbor’s walls, prompting him and his family to take cover.

“I woke up. I came out and the whole family inside here was startled, you know.. and then we kept hearing a little more shots. And so then that’s when we all just gathered in our living room, just laid down on the floor. And I mean it was pretty terrifying because then we heard more gunshots,” he said.

Anaheim police checked their records and said they’ve had no prior contact with the suspect.

Investigators are working to learn more about a possible motive.
