LOS ANGELES — This 4/20, it’s time to connect with cannabis culture’s roots.
The trailer for “4×20: Quick Hits” has just been released, showcasing an anthology series of shorts from executive producer Jimmy Kimmel about the history of cannabis culture in America.
The series will feature four 20-minute documentary films, each highlighting different historical aspects of how weed culture became part of the national conversation.
“I love that we’re having a conversation about how this fit into our cultural zeitgeist,” Neil Patrick Harris said in the trailer.
“Highly Unlikely” goes behind the scenes of “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” to see how a stoner comedy starring two unknown Asian American actors could make it in Hollywood. The documentary features interviews with stars John Cho, Kal Penn and Neil Patrick Harris to uncover marijuana movie magic.
“I got super high…my parents are going to watch this,” John Cho laughed.
“High Times” explores the more than fifty-year history of the magazine of the same name. Speaking with some of the founders, it tells the story of how they were able to start a publication highlighting the counterculture of weed to eventually bring weed culture to the mainstream and influence political movements.
For the obscure-film buffs, “The Legend of Ganjasaurus Rex” examines the production of what some critics at the time called “one of the worst movies of all time,” “Ganjasaurus Rex.” A small budget movie about weed farmers fighting off a kaiju lizard, the film was made in protest against the War on Drugs during the 80’s and became a Humboldt County cult classic.
Finally, “Bong Voyage” explores the hand-blown glass art involved in crafting marijuana paraphernalia, as well as the federal government crackdown on producing such equipment during Operation Pipe Dreams.
All four short films will be fittingly released just in time for 4/20 this year.
“4×20: Quick Hits” starts streaming April 20 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
