After announcing that she is expecting her third baby — her first with fiancé Steven Krueger — Candice King revealed if her pregnancy will be written into We Were Liars season 2.
“We’ll be filming next summer,” King, 38, exclusively told Us Weekly after announcing her pregnancy on Monday, December 8, following a babymoon trip to Aruba. “I will be bringing my baby. Obviously we don’t know the exact timeline yet, but I will be bringing my baby to film [the show].”
King couldn’t give too much away about how the show will evolve.
“What I can say is that there is a prequel. There’s a prequel called Family of Liars,” she teased before joking, “I have yet to get my baby present from [creators] Julie [Plec] and Carina [Adly Mackenzie], which is all the spoilers for season 2. But I do know that there will be elements or a thick line of storytelling from Family of Liars.”
Based on E. Lockhart‘s YA book series, We Were Liars centers on the affluent Sinclair family, known for the idyllic summers they spend on their secluded island. Prime Video’s adaptation, which premiered in June focused largely on The Liars: Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind), Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), Mirren (Esther McGregor) and Johnny (Joseph Zada).
It was their parents — Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), Carrie (Mamie Gummer) and Bess (King) — who stole the show though. Luckily, Lockhart already wrote Family of Liars, which would show the moms as teenagers.
“[Season 2] is going back to experience to see what happened with the sisters when they were teenagers on the island. That is going to be very fun — even though technically I won’t be a part of those scenes,” King revealed. “For Bess, what I would like to see her experiencing is maybe wearing loose cashmere [and] lounging by the beach.”
Before joining We Were Liars, King worked with Plec on The Vampire Diaries, which inspired The Originals spinoff that featured Krueger — and had Mackenzie as the author of multiple episodes. Candice was married to Joe King while playing Caroline Forbes on The Vampire Diaries and welcomed daughters Florence and Josephine in 2016 and 2020, respectively.
Candice and Joe, 45, parted ways in 2022 and she subsequently moved on with Krueger, 36. Despite not sharing scenes during their TVD days, Candice and Krueger wouldn’t rule out a collaboration on We Were Liars.
“That would be convenient,” she quipped to Us. “We would both be there. Maybe I’ll ask Carina and Julie. … But that would be wonderful. It would be a dream. I think Steven is one of the most talented actors and I am a fan of his. Not just in life but on screen. I love Yellowjackets and I love watching him work. So I would love to get a front-row seat on a set.”
There is also room for more TVD reunions on We Were Liars — and Candice has one suggestion in particular.
“I want Michael Trevino,” she told Us about her former onscreen love interest. “I just love working with him. He’s like my brother, and I’d like to see him. I haven’t worked with him besides Vampire Diaries so I’d love to see what they could do with him.”
Before coming back to set, however, Candice is gearing up to expand her family with Krueger.
”It’s something that we’re not only excited about right now. This is something we’ve been daydreaming about so it’s lovely to be here right now celebrating it,” Candice shared about how she’s almost “halfway through” her pregnancy. “I’m due in May of 2026. I know it’s kind of crazy to be at that almost halfway point. … The most important thing [for us] is a happy, healthy mama and baby. At each little milestone and appointment, that’s been a big celebration.”
The couple found an opportunity to celebrate the milestone with a trip to Aruba.
“We live in Nashville, Tennessee, so it’s really close to get down to those islands. The travel was really easy. I would normally be the person that would be planning all of this and going above and beyond,” she explained. “When we went to Japan earlier this year, it was pages of itineraries down to the hour and the minute. What we were really craving was just to relax and go somewhere close by. We wanted to go somewhere where I could feel safe and where we could feel healthy.”
Candice continued: “Especially still being within that early part of my pregnancy, Aruba was just perfect. It had beaches, sun and fruit. I forget how important it is to be able to be present — especially during pregnancy — when the most important thing is to wind down and really pay attention to your body, your emotional state and how important that is just to be by the water.”
We Were Liars is currently streaming on Prime Video.
