After news broke about their surprise romance, Tell Me Lies‘ Spencer House and Sonia Mena made rare comments about their relationship off set.
House, 33, and Mena, 28, reflected on the numerous costar relationships between Tell Me Lies costars during an exclusive joint interview with Us Weekly at Clarins’ Sugar & Shine Galentine’s Affair in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 29.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” Mena said before quipping, “Because the relationships on screen are just terrifying. We are very different than the people we play.”
Mena and House, who play onscreen couple Pippa and Wrigley, respectively, credited casting director Lauren Grey. They emphasized, however, that they couldn’t be more separate from the characters they portray on the hit Hulu series.
“We are obviously very different. When you spend so much time with the people you work with — a spark happens,” he noted. “But there’s a line between us and work.”
Based on Carola Lovering‘s novel of the same name, Tell Me Lies follows the messy relationship between college students Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White). Offscreen, Van Patten and White sparked romance rumors after season 1 premiered in 2022. Branden Cook, meanwhile, recently got engaged to Katherine Hughes, who plays his character Evan’s love interest.

News broke earlier this month that Mena and House have been dating for several years after meeting on set. They grew closer after their characters were paired off for the show’s three-season run — although Pippa and Wrigley have since appeared to grow apart on screen.
“We work so much but then we don’t spend as much time together [on set]. But we still hang out a lot” Mena noted to Us, before telling House, “I miss doing scenes with you. But then it also made the ones that we got to do that much more fun.”
House agreed that there was “less” content between Wrigley and Pippa, adding, “[But] we shoot a lot of scenes at the same time — on a different block schedule. So in between shots, you can just walk over to the next set and say, ‘Hi.’”
Season 3, which premiered in January, surprised viewers by hinting at a romance between Wrigley and Bree (Cat Missal). House previously told Us that he “loved” adding a new component to his character’s backstory.
“This was the most fun I’ve had in any season. It’s because Wrigley got to have an arc that had an upwards trajectory,” he shared. “The first two were spirals, which was good in its own way.”
House continued: “But for me — as someone who’s shown up to work every day embodying that — it was nice to do an upwards trajectory. That was meaningful and nice.”
Now that production on Tell Me Lies has wrapped, House and Mena have more time to spend together. Valentine’s Day, however, will look a little different for the low-key couple this year.
“We hope that we’re in the same city,” he told Us at the Clarins’ Galentine’s Day event, which highlighted the brand’s iconic Lip Perfector. “I’m planning something but it’s going to be before or after Valentine’s Day. Every now and again, I’ll do a little surprise.”
New episodes of Tell Me Lies premiere Tuesdays on Hulu.
