MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. () — While much of the country continues to grapple with frigid temperatures and heavy snow, Southern California is experiencing a burst of summer-like warmth that brought crowds to Manhattan Beach over the weekend.

With temperatures well above seasonal averages, beachgoers took advantage of the unexpected heat, turning what is typically one of the region’s cooler months into a chance for sun, sand and ocean dips.

The warm conditions stood in sharp contrast to the Midwest and East Coast, where communities are still digging out from last week’s extreme winter storms. According to News, strong gusts between 35 and 60 mph and heavy snow are creating possible blizzard conditions this weekend from eastern Georgia to Maryland.

Officials and regular beachgoers noted several simple ways to stay safe in the unusual January heat: cool off in the ocean, bring an umbrella for shade, stay hydrated during activities like volleyball or biking, and use sunscreen or other protective SPF gear.
