Real Madrid suffered their second defeat in the UEFA Champions League this season as AC Milan claimed a stunning 3-1 win at the Bernabeu.

Alvaro Morata returned to the Spanish capital to haunt his old side again, while Vinicius Junior’s penalty was not enough as goals from Malick Thiaw and Tijjani Reijnders earned the Italians a huge three points.

Madrid fell behind for the third consecutive game – which has included two ties in the Champions League – when Milan took the lead through Thiaw’s header. He found space in between Aurelien Tchouameni and Eder Militao to net his first goal for the club.

It did not take long for Madrid to strike back through Vinicius from the spot after he drew a penalty from Emerson Royal’s clumsy challenge. The Brazilian notably stepped up to take the penalty instead of Kylian Mbappe, before clipping it down the middle.

There would be more drama before the break, though, as Morata popped up to fire his new team back in front. Rafael Leao’s strike was saved by Andriy Lunin, but Morata was the only player on alert as he reacted quickly enough to poke home his seventh goal against his old side.

Milan silenced the Bernabeu with a third goal through Reijnders for an astonishing two-goal cushion, and while Madrid threw everything at the away side in search of a comeback in the latter stages, it was not to be as Paulo Fonseca’s side held on for a memorable victory.

Talking point – Madrid second best as pressure piles on Ancelotti

Madrid have suffered a second successive defeat and conceded seven goals in the process. In their last Champions League game, they recovered from a two-goal deficit to overcome Borussia Dortmund in stunning fashion, but the script was very different on Tuesday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were comfortably second-best throughout the game, while the Italians were far more resilient in defence and much more clinical going forward, which is worrying considering the firepower they’ve added to their side.

The result leaves them 17th in the league phase table after four games, though amazingly they are still a place ahead of Milan in 18th. The Italians surprised everyone with their performance at the Bernabeu after two defeats in their previous three Champions League games.

As Los Blancos struggle in Europe and domestically – where they are already nine points adrift of Barcelona in La Liga after their 4-0 El Clasico defeat – could Ancelotti be under pressure after defeat against his old side?

Player of the Match – Alvaro Morata (AC Milan)

As if things could not get any worse for Real Madrid, Morata scored against them again to rub salt into the wounds. It is his seventh goal against his old club – more than any other opponent in his career – where he played 95 times across two spells.

The ex-Atletico Madrid man has already been booed at the Bernabeu this year when he visited with Spain for a friendly against Brazil in March, but it seems he used that reception as motivation for his next visit.

Morata took his goal brilliantly too, reacting to Leao’s strike when everyone else was watching on to stab home the decisive second.

Match highlights

6’ – CHANCE FOR MBAPPE! The cross comes in from the right but the Frenchman can’t sort out his feet as the chance flashes before his eyes! He should do better there.

12’ – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 0-1 AC MILAN (THIAW): Madrid are behind at the Bernabeu again! It comes straight from Christian Pulisic’s corner, where Malick Thiaw gets in between Tchouameni and Eder Militao before sending a fine header beyond Lunin!

21’ – PENALTY TO MADRID! Vinicius drives into the box from the left and Emerson Royal trips the Brazilian as he approaches the six-yard box, which leaves the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

23’ – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 1-1 AC MILAN (VINICIUS): Vinicius clips it straight down the middle and Madrid are level! It was notably the Brazilian who took the spot-kick and not Mbappe…

38’ – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 1-2 AC MILAN (MORATA): It just had to be him! Milan fly forward again down the right and Pulisic finds Leao in the box, who turns, shoots but sees his shot saved. Everyone is standing still ball-watching, except Morata who pounces on the rebound and pokes Milan back in front!

51’ – WHAT A SAVE TO DENY LEAO! Leao gets on the end of Royal’s cross and his header towards the back post forces a superb save from Lunin! The danger isn’t clear there, though, and Hernandez races into the box before pulling a cross back which flashes across goal without a touch. That’s a chance for a third wasted!

62’ – MBAPPE GOES WIDE! Modric wins possession on the edge of the box and threads a ball through to Mbappe, who strikes wide!

73’ – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 1-3 AC MILAN (REIJNDERS): Madrid are in deep, deep trouble at the Bernabeu! Leao darts down the right flank which has been a problem for Madrid all night. He finds Reijnders in the box who is totally free, as the midfielder spins on the spot before firing home a third for Milan.

81’ – GOAL!!! – REAL MADRID 2-3 AC MILAN (RUDIGER): There’s one back for the home side! Rudiger thumps a half-volley into an almost empty net after Maignan punches Ceballos’ delivery clear.

84’ – NO GOAL! Wow! VAR has chalked it off because of an offside in the build-up. It looked as though he was millimetres offside when Ceballos initially put the cross in. Milan keep hold of their two-goal cushion.

87’ – MILAN SHOULD HAVE FOUR! Madrid are cut open yet again as Hernandez finds Loftus-Cheek in the box, who thumps a close-range effort at Lunin! It’s a good save from the goalkeeper, but the former Chelsea man should really do better!

89’ – VINI SENDS A HEADER WIDE! He gets on the end of a cross, totally unmarked in the six-yard box, but guides it wide. That’s a huge miss from the Ballon d’Or runner-up.

90’+2 – WHAT A SAVE! Or is that a really, really bad miss from Brahim Diaz? He is all alone in the box as he latches onto a cross from the left, but he sends a header straight at Maignan who uses a strong right hand to keep it out. Madrid have had the chances in the last few minutes, it’s just not coming off!
