FORT LAUDERDALE – There is much to be thankful for this November as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts brings to the stage a bounty of theater, music, variety, holiday traditions and family fun, including Broadway’s Tony Award®-winning “The Cher Show”; funk-rock band Here Come the Mummies and The Toxards; Dove Award-winners Sixpence None the Richer; the return of Black Violin; Mannheim Steamroller Christmas to kick off the holiday season; a multidisciplinary theatrical experience in “The Happening – A Theatrical Mixtape”; everyone’s favorite game show, “Wheel of Fortune Live!”; and plenty of family-friendly entertainment with “The Tales of Custard the Dragon,” “Disney Jr. Live On Tour: Let’s Play,” and “Frozen Jr.”
There’s still time to catch Slow Burn Theatre Company’s production of “The Witches of Eastwick” on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, November 2 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, November 3 at 2 p.m., supported by American National Bank and Visit Lauderdale in the Amaturo Theater. The original West End production was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Musical and is based on the 1984 novel of the same name by John Updike and the basis for the 1987 film starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. In the tiny New England town of Eastwick, three modern day witches innocently plot and conjure over a heady brew of weak martinis and peanut butter brownies. But all hell breaks loose when their shared desire for “all manner of man in one man” arrives in the form of charismatic stranger Darryl Van Horne. The musical has book and lyrics by John Dempsey and music by Dana P. Rowe, the creative team behind “Zombie Prom” and “The Fix.” The production is licensed by Music Theatre International and presented through special arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh Ltd.
The eight-piece funk-rock band Here Come the Mummies and The Toxards, with its psych-prog-theatre flair, perform in the Amaturo Theater as part of the Cleveland Clinic Rock Series on Thursday, November 7 at 8 p.m. The 5,000-year-old Egyptian Mummies, all mayhem-inducing mavens of mirth, deliver the “terrifying funk from beyond the grave” that has led them to perform with P-Funk, Al Green, Mavis Staples, KC and the Sunshine Band and Cheap Trick. They have also rocked Super Bowl Village, become a regular on “The Bob and Tom Show” and appeared on “That’s My Jam” with Jimmy Fallon. The Toxhards are breathing new life into rock n’ roll with an electric and eccentric new sound from its existential doom-bops to rip-roaring anthems about hog gods.
The holiday tradition continues as “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas” kicks off the season in the Au-Rene Theater as part of the Baptist Health Red Carpet Series on Thursday, November 14 at 8 p.m. Grammy® Award winner Chip Davis has created a show that features Mannheim Steamroller Christmas classics in the distinctive Mannheim sound. This program features 15 musicians playing more than 20 instruments against a backdrop of dazzling multimedia effects that capture the spirit of the season in an immersive, yet intimate setting.
The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and AEG Presents bring Dove Award winners Sixpence None the Richer with special guest Mike Fuller to the Amaturo Theater on Friday, November 15 at 8 p.m. The band has helped shape the musical landscape across generations with their inspiring releases, including their self-titled album as well as “The Fatherless & the Widow,” “This Beautiful Mess,” “Divine Discontent,” “Dawn of Grace” and “Lost in Transition.” The band’s song “Kiss Me,” featured in countless movies and TV shows, catapulted Sixpence None the Richer into the mainstream and generated airplay in more than 10 different countries. The band also had hits with covers of La’s “There She Goes” and the Crowded House classic, “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” The group’s original members reunited recently and released “The Tide,” which has already amassed more than two million views and streams across platforms. Singer-songwriter Mike Fuller blends Americana, rock, folk, and soul to create a sound that is refreshing and timeless. His latest release, “The Missed Connection EP,” showcases his energetic blues-rock style. He made his mark during the pandemic with his virtual concert series, “Quarantunes,” raising more than $3,500 for New York City-based charities. His newest album is slated for 2025.
“Wheel of Fortune Live!” brings America’s Game® to the Au-Rene Theater on Friday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. One of the greatest game shows of all time gives everyone a chance to get in on the fun with audience games and ticketholders who are randomly selected to go on stage to spin a replica of the iconic wheel. Contestants selected from the audience will have the chance to call consonants, buy vowels and maybe even solve puzzles to win fantastic prizes, including trips to destinations like Paris and Hawaii or up to $10,000 in cash. VIP packages are available.
Young audiences will enjoy the whimsical stories of “The Tales of Custard the Dragon” in the Abdo New River Room. Based on “The Tales of Custard the Dragon” and “Custard the Dragon and the Wicked Knight” by Ogden Nash, this musical tale follows the exploits of young Belinda and her three boastfully brave pets: Mustard the Dog, Ink the Cat and Blink the Mouse, as well as one not-so-brave dragon, Custard. When Belinda is confronted by a fearsome pirate and, later, a wicked knight, it’s Cowardly Custard who comes to the rescue as audiences discover real courage comes from love.
The production is presented on Friday, November 15 at 10 and 11:30 a.m. as a Smart Stage Matinee, ideal for charter, private, public and parochial school students and home-school networks. These educational performances are curriculum-driven and align with Florida’s B.E.S.T. standards. Free study guides called “Curriculum Connections” are available to download on the Broward Center’s website.
The event is presented on Sunday, November 17 at 1 p.m. as part of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Imagination Series, which offers a passport to a fun-filled adventure with a host of family-friendly productions.
“The Tales of Custard the Dragon”: A Sensory-Inclusive Performance, with a post-show meet and greet, is presented in the Abdo New River Room on Sunday, November 17 at 10:30 a.m. Intended to create a welcoming and supportive environment for children and adults on the autism spectrum as well as individuals with other sensitivity issues or developmental disabilities, this performance features slight adjustments, including reduced sound levels, no flashing or strobe lights and minimal special effects. An area adjacent to the theater has been designated as the ABA Centers of Florida Sensory Quiet Room with a specially trained therapist to provide audience support. Patrons may bring their own headphones, fidgets and other calming items into the theater or borrow these items at the theater. “Disney Jr. Live On Tour: Let’s Play” presented by Walmart comes to the Au-Rene Theater on Saturday, November 16 at noon and 4 p.m. as part of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Imagination Series. Mickey is getting ready for the biggest playdate ever at the Clubhouse with all his favorite pals including Minnie and Goofy, the Puppy Dog Pals, Ginny and Bitsy from “SuperKitties” and Ariel from “Disney Jr.’s Ariel,” but mysterious weather keeps interrupting the fun. Can Team Spidey from “Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends” find out who is behind this and help save the playdate? VIP packages are available.
The Broward Center and the Art Prevails Project present “The Happening – A Theatrical Mixtape, Volume VI: Power to the People” in the Abdo New River Room on Saturday, November 16 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, November 17 at 6 p.m.; Friday, November 22 at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, November 23 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Drama, poetry and music are used to explore the beauty and tragedy of the human experience in this sixth volume of the annual multidisciplinary theatrical experience. South Florida’s most-talented artists tug on every imaginable emotion as they lead a journey through the past, present and future in this immersive adventure filled with moments of laughter and deep contemplation that promises to leave audiences inspired. This event is part of Broward Center’s Arts for Action: Black Voices initiative presented by Baptist Health and JM Family Enterprises Inc. with support from TD Charitable Foundation. This initiative is designed to elevate the voices of Black artists with a focus on how the arts and artists can be a force for change.
Black Violin: “BV20 Then & Now” celebrates 20 years of musical innovation in the Au-Rene Theater on Sunday, November 17 at 6 p.m. Kev Marcus on violin and Wil Baptiste on viola/vocals are joined by Nat Stokes on drums, DJ SPS on turntables and Liston Gregory on keys to deliver a performance that transcends genres, combining the elegance of classical strings with the dynamic beats of hip-hop. Since Marcus and Baptiste first met in orchestra class at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, they have been merging string arrangements with modern hip-hop beats and vocals and building bridges in communities along the way. NPR reported of the two-time Grammy® Award nominees, “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.” A VIP Black Violin Soundcheck Experience can be added to any ticket. This performance is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Florida Division of Arts & Culture.
The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and The Performance Project present the Fall Youth Musical – “Frozen Jr.” in the Amaturo Theater on Tuesday, November 19 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Wednesday, November 20 at 8 p.m. Performed by talented students ages nine to 15 who make up the Youth Fall Musical group, the enchanting modern classic from Disney brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life onstage. Based on the 2018 Broadway musical, the show features all of the memorable songs from the animated film with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, plus five new songs written for the Broadway production. With a cast of beloved characters and loaded with magic, adventure and plenty of humor, “Frozen Jr.” is sure to thaw even the coldest heart!
