Miranda Lambert said she remembers meeting Gypsy Rose Blanchard when Blanchard was a Make-A-Wish kid, saying she “can’t believe” she was a part of it.
“I can’t believe I was part of that, but you don’t know at the time and neither did she,” Lambert said on Theo Von’s Thursday podcast episode. “Her mom worked the system, and it worked because we all met her. The whole country music community. Like, ask any of us. She was part of it. She was in it.”
Blanchard was found guilty in 2016 of aiding her ex-boyfriend in killing her mom, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, after Blanchard suffered from years of abuse from her mother. Dee Dee Blanchard was believed to have a factitious disorder imposed on another, formerly known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, in which a parent makes up or causes an illness or injury in their child.
Dee Dee convinced everyone, including doctors, nonprofits and family members that Blanchard had several illnesses, including leukemia, asthma and muscular dystrophy. Blanchard met several country music stars through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, including Lambert.
“I’ve met her several times,” Lambert said. “Super, super sweet girl.”
Lambert said on the podcast that when the 2017 documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest” came out, she went down a “rabbit hole” investigating everything about Blanchard and her mother.
“When all that came out, I was freaking out,” Lambert said.
She continued: “The whole thing was crazy. But it was real to her. She was a child. She was a baby child.”
Blanchard served eight years in prison and was released at the end of 2023. She has since become a social media star and is expecting her first child.
