Manchester United responded in style to the departure of manager Erik ten Hag with a 5-2 victory over Leicester City to make the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Under the interim management of Ten Hag’s assistant, former United golden boy Ruud van Nistelrooy, the reds came on strong, opening scoring in the 15th-minute.

What followed was a frantic first half, which saw six goals scored, including a brace by Casemiro and four of which came within the space of just 11 minutes.

While the visitors ended that half with a foot still in the game though at 4-2 down, they could not come back in the second half, and in truth didn’t look terribly committed to doing so.

While Bruno Fernandes scored his second of the match in the 59th minute, he looked frustrated not to add to that, as did Joshua Zirkzee who failed to find the sweet spot. Nevertheless, the home side had done more than enough to secure their passage to the next round.
