DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES () — A large rally for the people of Iran was held in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday. Hundreds of protesters gathered to call on U.S. lawmakers to publicly support the Iranian people.

The situation continues to devolve in Iran as more protesters have been executed by the government.

On social media on Sunday, Iran’s president blamed U.S. sanctions for economic hardships and ensuing protests in the country. He also said any aggression toward the country’s supreme leader is a declaration of all-out war against Iran.

The Human Rights Activist News Agency reports that more than 3,900 people have been killed by the Iranian regime since the end of December, with more than 24,000 protesters having been arrested. News cannot independently verify those numbers.

The group protesting in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon rallied together to support Iranians and also call on U.S. government leaders to join them in their support.

AIR7 video shows hundreds of people joined together in front of the L.A. City Hall and also marching in the surrounding streets. The rally went from around noon to just after 3 p.m.

The group waved Iranian flags and chanted “Freedom for Iran” and “Long live Pahlavi,” an exiled prince in Iran.

There were several signs that said” Make Iran Great Again,” and those that acknowledged the deaths of protestors in Iran.

The rally was organized by a coalition of Iranian Americans, students, human rights advocates and activists.

Supporters called on U.S. government leaders to publicly support Iranians, as they have seen with President Donald Trump.

“The people of Iran, having the United States, the people of the United States, the president of the United States, supporting them means everything,” said rally participant Tehran. “It gives them the will and inspiration to keep fighting, and that is something they need right now. They’re dying in the streets over freedoms and rights we take for granted every day.”

“Having been connected with oppositions for 47 years, this is the first time ever that I see the American government, the American president, voice a support for the uprising, and actually, in some ways, carry out that support,” said Ali Parpaneh.

“Today, people walk out in L.A. to support my people in Iran. It means everything to us. It means we stand behind them and we can give our life for their freedom, to get out of this brutal regime. We need quick action,” said Aria, who was participating in the rally.

“I hope the people of L.A. learn how many people — their neighbors, their friends, their coworkers — are affected by what is going on with the Islamic Republic regime oppressing the people of Iran. I hope they realize that freedom is not just an American right, it’s something the whole world should experience,” Tehran said.

One participant said that President Trump’s support has been welcome in Iran, but said that over the last couple of days, they were disappointed that support seemed to be fading.

The group called on members of Congress to submit a video expressing solidarity and also supporting Iranians’ freedom.
