Grey’s Anatomy’s Jason George Teases Fans Shouldn’t ‘Relax’ Yet After Fall Finale Showed Jo’s Life in Danger (Exclusive)

Grey’s Anatomy fans are worried about some of their favorite characters after the season 22 fall finale — and they should continue to be concerned when the hit ABC series returns.

During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Jason George teased what is to come after the first half of the season ended with Ben helping Jo (Camilla Luddington) amid her premature emergency C-section.

“Ben and Jo have a special relationship. Ben is definitely worried and that’s where we leave off. I got a lot of calls from my friends who are Jo fans and I have had some conversations,” he said about concerns about Luddington’s character. “I wouldn’t say relax — as far as that’s concerned.”

Despite the deadly premiere, George says the hit medical drama will balance life and death situations with more light-hearted stories.

“The rest of the season — it’s fun. The writers did a brilliant job with bringing in the new interns and integrating them in the story. You’ve got people who’ve been around for a minute and people who are learning,” he noted. “There are people who found their spot in the world who are growing in their life. The interns are growing in learning how to be doctors. Ben is doing both at any given moment in time.”

George enjoyed getting to see how Ben will evolve, adding, “It’s going to be interesting when you see Ben’s ability to adapt and overcome that firefighter mentality. It’s going to come into play in the way he grows. It’ll be fun for anybody who is a fan of Ben. By the end of the season, it’ll be a thumbs up season.”

The actor originated the role of Ben when he joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2010. His fan-favorite character later moved on to Station 19 before returning as a main cast member in 2024.

Throughout its lengthy run, Grey’s Anatomy has said goodbye — and then hello again — to countless popular characters. As the first series regular to exit from the ABC medical drama, fans were surprised when Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke) returned to Grey’s Anatomy in 2014 — seven years after he was fired for using a […]

“I was a fan of the show before I was ever on the show. That’s a rare opportunity for an actor,” he shared. “I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s going to be. I definitely would not put it past the writers to throw us another [shocking finale this season]. Every time you try and game the system, they get you. They’re like, ‘We’ll keep knocking you down every time.’ And you come back for more.”

After season 22 premiered in September, George was thrilled that his character wasn’t a victim of the deadly explosion. He didn’t have too much time to enjoy Ben’s safety, though, before being concerned about the next possible cliffhanger.

“It is a blessing and a curse that characters die on this show. The curse is the fact that as actors when you find a great job like this — where you really love everything about it — you just want to stick around for as long as you can. But the other side is when there are real stakes — when people actually can die — then the story gets better,” he noted. “Anything is on the table with the show and it’s one of the things that makes it so good.”

Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC Thursday, January 8, at 10 p.m. ET before streaming the next day on Hulu.
