In The Substance, Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, an actress fired from her TV fitness show for being too old. In hopes of regaining her youth, she takes a black market drug  to create a younger alternate version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley.

Things quickly take a horrifying turn as the two women fight for time in the spotlight.

Moore has been open about how a talented team was able to completely change her look to play Elisabeth Sparkle. While shooting The Substance, Moore recalled spending time in a makeup chair for several hours of grotesque prosthetic work to transform her face and body.

“I sat in the chair anywhere from six to nine and a half hours with a good two hours to take it off,” she told Seth Meyers in September. “It’s a much easier thing to read on paper, but I’m so glad I have the experience.”

As the film continues to receive positive reviews, Moore is left feeling grateful to have an opportunity to take on a unique character that will leave moviegoers captivated from beginning to end.

She also won’t let aging stop her from reaching new heights in her personal and professional life.

“I really try to be as present in the moment as possible, and what I feel is an excitement of possibilities, that we’re defining a new — I don’t want to say generation — but we are what the future is for women,” Moore shared on the September 9 episode of Today. “To me, this is the most exciting time of my life. It is.”

The Substance is in theaters now and available to stream on MUBI.
