SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES () — Los Angeles police shot and killed a dog following a traffic stop in Sun Valley, which prompted the bomb squad to be called in early Monday morning.

The incident started as a traffic stop near Telfair Avenue and Penrose Street just south of the 5 Freeway around 1 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Details about what prompted the traffic stop were not available, but fireworks were found inside the car. The investigation appeared to be focused on a white sedan.

It’s also unclear what prompted police to shoot and kill a dog at the scene, and what connection the animal had to the suspect car.

A woman who said she’s the owner of the dog spoke to Eyewitness News. She said the dog was a 5-year-old pit bull.

“I don’t know why… Its hurting me so bad. And the cops are not giving me any answers,” said Chankara Beshay. “She’s protective but it’s different because she has puppies. You know how dogs get overprotective when they have puppies.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
