SANTA ANA, Calif. () — Four people were killed and two others were injured late Saturday when a car slammed into a tree in Santa Ana, authorities said.

The high-speed collision was reported at 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Segerstrom Avenue and Griset Place, according to Officer Natalie Garcia, a spokesperson for the Santa Ana Police Department.

Five females and one male, all residents of Santa Ana, were in the car at the time of the crash. Four were pronounced dead at the scene and two others were transported to a hospital, police said.

The names and of the deceased and injured were not immediately released, but they ranged in age from early teens to early 20s. Several of the occupants of the vehicle were siblings or otherwise related to each other, Garcia said.

“Our detectives believe the occupants were under the influence of either drugs or alcohol,” Garcia said.

Santa Ana police initially said five people were killed in the single-vehicle collision. Authorities later revised the death toll to four people, with two others hospitalized — one in critical condition, the other in stable condition.

Five of the individuals were believed be part of the Santa Ana Unified School District, according to the Police Department.

Upon the car’s impact with the tree, two other vehicles traveling in the opposite direction at the time were struck by flying debris, investigators said. No injuries to the occupants of the other vehicles were reported.
